Jason Bornstein from a mens apparel brand, Bonobos contacted me and asked if I would be up for writing a summer post around their new line of mens summer suits. It had dawned on me that I only style with women's apparel, but I had this idea of styling an outfit that was inspired by Bonobos' new line came to me, thinking this was what he wanted, he apparently didn't but thought the idea was great, so I just went for it.
More about Bonobos
Bonobos is a clothing brand focused on delivering great fit, high energy, and superb customer experience. Launched in 2007 on the Internet with its signature line of better-fitting men’s pants, Bonobos is now the largest apparel brand ever built on the web in the United States. In 2011 Bonobos extended offline, launching Bonobos Guideshops, e-commerce showrooms that deliver personalized, one-to-one service to those wanting to experience the brand in-person. In 2012, Bonobos expanded its distribution partnering with Nordstrom, bringing Bonobos apparel into select doors nationwide and to Nordstrom.com. Across channels, Bonobos is focused on delivering a well-targeted brand promise: world-class fit, an innovative shopping experience and an energetic brand spirit. Bonobos was named "One of America’s Hottest Brands" by Advertising Age, "Best Men’s Pants" by New York Magazine, one of Inc. Magazine’s "20 Awesome Facebook Pages" and was awarded Crain’s "Best Places to Work in New York City". Visit www.bonobos.com.
They have pretty awesome looking suits that can be worn for both casual and formal occasions.
The theme of Bonobos revolves around having the clothes being worn to fit perfectly. It doesn't technically matter if the piece of clothing looks good on the rack, it matters most of it fits right and perfectly on your figure.
Here are some Suit Styling & Fit Tips for the men out there reading this from the VP of Design at Bonobos, Dwight Fenton:
“Fit is the most important detail for a suit. Marry that with classic color options and quality fabric, and you have a great looking, versatile suit for every occasion,” says Dwight Fenton, Bonobos VP of Design.
Fenton’s simple suit tips to find the right fit:
• Fit starts with the shoulders: The jacket should grab your shoulders snuggly but not be overly tight. If the shoulders fit, pretty much anything else can be adjusted.
• Length matters: To determine the appropriate length, you should be able to cup the bottom of the suit with your arms by your side.
• Show some shirt: A flexible but general rule of thumb is to have a quarter-inch of your shirt cuff showing. If you’re wearing a heavier cuff, like a French cuff, you may want to show a little more.
And here are few pieces from their Spring 2014 collection, as well as a few of my Bonobos inspired outfit!
Unfortunately, Bonobos only ships to the US, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, and not any where close to the continent I'm in. But you should all definitely check out their store.
I picked out a few color and pattern schemes from here and there on the Bonobos site, and came up with this. A pair of pastel blue jeans, a blue blazer, and a floral top that substitutes as one of the neckties that they have on their store. I topped it off with a spiked necklace and some ankle strap heels.
